FAQ

Here are some common questions about Patriot Success.

  1. Who is eligible to participate?
    • All undergraduate, degree-seeking students
  2. What is “beacon”?
    • Beacon is the name of the survey tool we use.
  3. How will this help me to be successful at Mason?
    • The Patriot Success “beacon” survey helps identify areas where you may benefit from some additional support, and helps identify offices and other resources on campus to support your success. Specific questions about your plans to return to Mason, sense of belonging, financial concerns, and involvement interests are used to inform direct outreach from relevant offices on campus.
  4. How do we use information from the The Patriot Success “beacon” survey?
    • In addition to direct outreach based on your responses to specific questions, we compare survey responses over time to see changes in students’ experiences at Mason. Some questions are used to develop new programs and deliver better services to meet the needs of Mason students.
  5. What do my results mean?
    • Your percentile numbers from the survey are based on comparisons with other students who completed the survey in the past year.
    • A “high” percentile number indicates that your scores are in the top 25 percent of survey completers.
    • A “moderate” percentile number indicates that your scores are in the middle 50 percent of survey completers.
    • A “low” percentile number indicates that your scores are in the lowest 25 percent of students who completed the survey in the past year.
  6. My scores are lower than I expected. What does this mean?
    • The survey is NOT scored out of 100, like a test or exam. A percentile score between 26-75 means that your responses are consistent with the majority of other survey completers.
    • There are no “right” or “wrong” answers on the survey.
    • If your percentile numbers are lower than you expected in any category, you may want to seek out resources to build your skills in that particular area.   Some resources are listed on your Patriot Success “beacon” profile, and there are even more resources available on campus to support your success!
  7. Can I access my Patriot Success “beacon” profile after the survey administration is over?
    • You can access your Patriot Success “beacon” profile and survey results at any time by going to gmu.campuslabs.com/beacon/ and logging in using your Mason username and password.
